Microsoft Expands Phone Link Capabilities: Instant Hotspot and Enhanced Connectivity for Android Users

Microsoft has made significant advancements with its Phone Link app, allowing Android smartphone users to enhance their connectivity with Windows PCs. This improvement includes an instant hotspot feature that is now available on a wider range of Android devices beyond just those from Samsung. Brands like OnePlus and Oppo are also included, enabling users to seamlessly connect their PCs to the internet using their mobile devices without the hassle of manual settings. This enhancement builds upon the innovative Copilot chatbot features recently integrated into Android smartphones through the Phone Link application.

The Instant Hotspot capability was initially exclusive to Windows 11 PCs paired with Samsung smartphones via the Phone Link app. This feature functions by utilizing a service embedded within the Windows operating system. According to recent reports, other manufacturers like OnePlus and Oppo have been included in the rollout of this functionality, expanding the options for users.

To utilize this feature, users need to launch the Link to Windows app and look for the option to instantly connect their PC to a mobile hotspot. It has been rolled out as a server-side update, meaning that devices not yet upgraded may receive an over-the-air update to bring them in line with the latest version of the Windows Service app.

Moreover, besides the newly added instant hotspot functionality, Android smartphone users are expected to benefit from additional capabilities, such as cross-device copy and paste, along with app streaming features.

In July, Microsoft introduced an update for Copilot that allowed users to manage selected tasks directly from their linked Android smartphones. This integration allows users to connect their Android 14 devices with Windows 11 PCs via the Phone Link app, allowing for Copilot to handle various handset functions, which include sending messages, setting alarms, and summarizing notifications. Nonetheless, it's crucial to highlight that this characteristic is still classified as in its beta version and may not yet be accessible to all general users.
