Kicking Off the Tokyo International Film Festival: The Epic Tale of 11 Rebels
- 14 Sep, 2024
The Tokyo International Film Festival is quickly finalizing its lineup, and has chosen a fitting film to serve as its opening piece.
11 Rebels, directed by Shiraishi Kazuya and inspired by a screenplay from the renowned Kasahara Kazuo, portrays a group of samurai during the Boshin War as they confront seemingly insurmountable challenges to protect a stronghold.
Shozo Ichiyama, the festival's programming director, remarked that this production carries on the legacy of ensemble period dramas that Toei, the studio behind 11 Rebels, historically excelled in, highlighting superior production values found in modern Japanese cinema in areas ranging from action sequences to set design.
Moreover, it is important to emphasize that the movie brings attention to individuals who have often been overlooked in history.
11 Rebels has already secured distribution rights in North America, with hopes that it will benefit from the recent triumph of FX's Shogun.
