Daniel Craig in Talks for Sgt. Rock Film Directed by Luca Guadagnino in New DC Universe Venture
- 25 Nov, 2024
In recent developments, a potential film featuring a notable character from the DC Universe is reportedly making waves. The project focuses on Sgt. Rock, and it seems a significant star may be involved. As per a recent report, former James Bond actor Daniel Craig is discussing the opportunity to lead in the film adaptation of Sgt. Rock, with acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino also attached to the project. If the collaboration is confirmed, it would mark another partnership for Craig and Guadagnino following their work on the A24 indie feature Queer, which is set for a limited release in U.S. theaters on November 27.
Details about the narrative remain largely undisclosed at this time. However, writer Justin Kuritzkes, who has previously teamed up with Guadagnino on Challengers and Queer, has been tasked with penning the script. Although no official announcement has come from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn regarding the Sgt. Rock project, it stands out as a less mainstream selection among comic book figures, aligning with Gunn's history of transforming lesser-known characters into successful ventures, as demonstrated with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The character of Sgt. Franklin John Rock was first introduced to audiences in June 1959, crafted by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. He serves as a World War II soldier and a skilled combatant, maintaining an ongoing presence in various DC media over the years, albeit never taking center stage in a significant project. Past efforts to bring him to cinema have largely fallen short, with actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger previously linked to the role. Furthermore, the combination of Craig and Guadagnino would certainly introduce a pair of high-profile names to Gunn's expanding universe.
Craig is particularly renowned for his portrayal of Bond across five films from 2006 to 2021. His diverse filmography also includes the role of Detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson's Knives Out series. Guadagnino, on the other hand, achieved worldwide fame with Call Me By Your Name in 2017 and continued with notable works such as the 2018 Suspiria remake, the 2022 horror romance Bones and All, and this summer’s Challengers.
This announcement coincides with plans for Gunn's DC Universe to officially debut with the animated series Creature Commandos on December 5 on Max. The first live-action installment of the DCU is scheduled for summer 2025, with Superman expected to take flight in theaters on July 11.
