Sony's PSVR 2 Support Dwindles Amidst Price and Development Challenges

Sony is reportedly ending PSVR 2 support, with only two games currently in development. Sony is considerably reducing its funding for PSVR 2 and first-party VR games for the headset.

The information originates from Android Central, which claims that sources close to the outlet are indicating significant reductions in VR game funding within Sony. In addition, another source mentioned to Android Central that only a couple of PSVR 2 games are currently under development. The specifics of these games or their ultimate release remain uncertain.

Sony is set to release a PSVR 2 PC adapter this August, which will facilitate the headset's compatibility with SteamVR titles by connecting to a PC. Priced at $59.99 / £49.99, the adapter offers PSVR 2 owners an option to expand compatibility. However, the announcement of this accessory has cast doubts on the headset's future.

When PSVR 2 launched early in 2023, it had a promising start. Its strong initial lineup included Horizon: Call of the Mountain, along with subsequent support for Gran Turismo 7 and the remarkable remake of Resident Evil 4. Additionally, the recent inclusion of PSVR 2 games in the PS Plus Premium catalog is beneficial for headset owners seeking new games without significant spending.

Nonetheless, the hefty price tag of $549.99 / £529.99 proved to be a significant deterrent for many consumers, especially considering it was pricier than the PS5 console itself. Although it is not the most expensive VR headset, the Meta Quest 3 offers a more affordable and versatile alternative with its wireless, standalone capabilities, making Sony's headset a tough sell even for PS5 owners.

It would be unfortunate if the reports are accurate and Sony intends to halt active support for PSVR 2. The silver lining is the possibility of a permanent price reduction in the future, enabling the brand to sell existing stock and providingproviding more PS5 owners the opportunity to experience what an excellent headset is.
